Trans Canada Rail Tours
Today, there still exists a continuous series of connecting train services from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean in Canada. A trans-continental rail journey of 3,946 miles, on the passenger trains of VIA Rail, remains one of the greatest railway journeys in the world.
The signature train on VIA Rail is The Canadian. The “Canadian” is a four night ride from Vancouver, British Columbia to Toronto, Ontario in either direction with comfortable sleeper touring class accommodations. Meals are served in the dining car and are included with your ticket. You have full access to the lounges and the dome cars where you can enjoy the ever changing delightful scenery on your journey across Canada from a comfortable seat looking out a 180 degree glass enclosure.
Disembark in Jasper, Alberta to explore the majestic Canadian Rockies. The views are impressive whether you are looking up from the valleys along the Icefields Parkway, walking or motoring through the towns of Jasper, Lake Louise and Banff or cruising on Maligne Lake in Jasper, Lake Louise in Lake Louise, or Lake Minnewanka in Banff . In addition there are plenty of views from the top with fun and exciting ways to get there such as the Banff Gondola, the tram to the top of Whistlers Mountain in Jasper, a ride onto the Columbia Icefields in an Ice Explorer, or walking on a clear glass sidewalk at the new Glacier Skywalk!
VIA Rail’s corridor service provides excellent Canadian inter city travel. Toronto is the largest city known for its dining, shopping, museums and cultural places to visit. Ottawa is Canada’s capital. Here you can visit the national museums and take a cruise on the Rideau Canal. Niagara Falls is one of the largest waterfalls in the world! The legacy the falls has produced is infinite: from people going over the falls in all sorts of contraptions or walking across them on a tight rope to the many movie legends that were filmed there. Montreal and Quebec City give you the charm and ambiance of being in Europe. Nothing could be better than having a glass of wine at a street cafe!
The “Ocean” is an overnight train through the Maritimes from Montreal or Quebec City to Moncton or Halifax. The Maritimes has an Irish or Scottish feel to them. Natural wonders abound! In New Brunswick, you MUST see the Hopewell Rocks. At this location you can view the highest tidal range in the world at the Bay of Fundy. Nova Scotia is home to the Bluenose Schooner, Peggy’s Cove Lighthouse and the famed Cabot Trail scenic drive. Prince Edward Island is where you will find the lore of Anne of Green Gables along with red sandy beaches. For a real adventure, take the ferry to Newfoundland where moose out number the people! Be sure to visit the beauty of Gros Mourne National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its complex geology. Or experience the splendor of nature on Iceberg Alley where these glacial giants float down from Greenland in every shape and size with colours ranging from snow-white to the deepest aquamarine.
There are many beautiful Fairmont Hotels that were built specifically for rail passengers as they traversed Canada by train. The most popular are: Hotel Vancouver, Jasper Park Lodge, Chateau Lake Louise, Banff Springs Hotel, Royal York, Queen Elizabeth, and Chateau Frontenac.
