Your train departs at 8:45pm.  Churchill is only accessible by air or train.  The train trip is two nights and one day, over tracks that were built in 1929 over permafrost and muskeg.  It took 3,000 men to lay the 1,000 miles of track to Churchill.

Overnights – VIA Rail

Day 5 – Beluga Whale & Prince of Wales Fort Boat Excursion

Today you will depart by boat and discover hundreds of beluga whales in the mouth of the Churchill River.  During the summer the Churchill River has the largest concentration of beluga whales in the world.  Over 3000 belugas spend time there birthing their young and feeding on crustaceans found in the warm water of the river.  After your boat tour, travel across the river to tour the Price of Wales Fort National Historic Site of Canada, the oldest most northerly stone fort in the country.  Here you can experience the history of the Hudson’s Bay Company and the fur trade of the 1700’s.  The Parks Canada Visitor Centre in Churchill provides an excellent introduction to the sites with exhibits and special presentations.

This afternoon you are free to explore Churchill on your own.  You can visit the Eskimo Museum, Parks Canada facility and the town complex.  Visitors can choose from a number of gift shops where souvenirs range from postcards to handmade Inuit wall hangings and stone carvings.

Overnight – Churchill (hotel to be determined)
